Apoteca Natura appStaying on top of your health is often easier said than done. There are so many things to monitor and remember. Are you getting enough exercise and sleep? Are you drinking enough water? When do you need to take your medication? What were your latest blood test results?

It’s not easy to balance managing your health with a busy day-to-day schedule, so Apoteca Natura developed a mobile app to monitor well-being and promote health through awareness to make healthy living more accessible.

The app is a part of a wider project called the Apoteca Natura Health and Loyalty System, which enables pharmacists to supervise the health of their patients and give the best suggestions for every individual need. Moreover, pharmacists can analyze data related to their pharmacies with a simple dashboard.

Putting it all together

We planned an app that not only gives users a single point of access for healthcare information, but can also provide therapy reminders, health updates and step-counting services. The app offers self-assessment tests developed with medical associations for a quick diagnosis of many common health concerns. Customers can even track their purchases through “MyCard,” the Apoteca Natura loyalty card.

To create this innovative application, named MyApotecaNatura, we reached out to IBM and IBM Business Partner Relatech.

Getting the technology right

Relatech chose key IBM technologies to enable us to start small, but grow extremely fast, while providing a high level of system security using the IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service. Because we chose the pure cloud route, there was no need for capital investment in physical systems. Applications running in the IBM Cloud are highly scalable, enabling quick and easy growth.

To ensure enterprise-level security for users’ sensitive data, Relatech recommended using IBM Db2 to store data and deploying IBM Watson Campaign Automation to manage it. IBM Watson Campaign Automation analyzes customer behavioral data to help us create focused marketing campaigns for our users, so we can communicate with them easily through their favorite channels.

For example, we can identify customers whose habits have changed, such as those who have stopped tracking their exercise, and send notifications to keep them interested and encourage them to continue living healthfully.

Happy, healthy customers

MyApotecaNatura has been a roaring success. Hundreds of thousands of users have already signed up, tracked more than 150,000 health assessment metrics and set more than 5,000 therapy reminders through the app. The service strengthens the role of pharmacists by connecting them directly to customers. The service also enables Apoteca Natura to understand customer personas and groups in much finer detail than ever before.

The forecast high registration numbers could be a cause for alarm, but the scalability of the IBM Cloud services means we can easily grow to meet the challenge. While the current priority is to improve and expand the current version of the system, we are considering adding even more features to the app, such as a virtual assistant, and expanding beyond Italy and Spain.

The scalability and flexibility of the IBM Cloud technology means there’s a huge scope for our relationship with IBM and Relatech to grow in the future.
